Would You Eat Me?

One-Act Opera // 2022

Summary

Would You Eat Me? follows K., a young woman battling a bout of catatonic depression, as she attempts to make the simplest possible meal from her celebrity chef mother’s cookbook: a loaf of bread. As she reads her late mother’s handwriting, her mother’s spirit comes alive — as perfect as ever — and “helps” her cook. In the end, will K. triumph over the paralyzing perfectionism instilled in her by her mother and eat whatever she makes, regardless of its quality? Perhaps the bread itself will have a say in that.

Writing Process

This opera was written in a very paralyzing and tumultuous time. Between making $500/mo before taxes at a theatre in Kentucky and a pandemic, I'm grateful to have finished this opera at all. It was a cathartic labor of love.

Call-for-Scores

Thompson Street Opera holds an annual call-for-scores competition to select a new work (or two) to produce on their season. More than 200 composers submitted, and this piece was one of three finalists.

Audience Vote

Ultimately, TSOC chooses the finalists, but the audience chose the final production. My piece was chosen by the audience as a double-bill with composer Nicole Murphy and was ultimately produced in Chicago, IL during summer 2022.

People say,

"The masterful singing of these two very emotional pieces left me in tears and more in touch with myself. The two pieces complimented each other perfectly."

— Brian Pember, Vocalist

Sounds Great!
